Diagnose common appliance problems and get repair guidance
Your refrigerator isn't cooling properly. Before you panic and assume the worst, let's figure out what's actually going on. Many appliance problems have simple causes—and some you can fix yourself without calling a repair technician.
Our diagnostic tool walks you through common appliance problems, helps you identify likely causes, and suggests DIY fixes to try before calling a pro. Sometimes a 'broken' dishwasher just has a clogged filter. A dryer that won't heat might just need its vent cleaned.
Even if you do need professional help, understanding what might be wrong helps you evaluate repair quotes and avoid being oversold on unnecessary work.
We guide you through a systematic troubleshooting process:
Many 'broken' appliances just need cleaning, resetting, or basic maintenance you can do yourself.
Understanding the problem helps you ask better questions and evaluate repair quotes.
Not every symptom means major repair. Sometimes it's just a tripped breaker or clogged filter.
Some problems need immediate professional attention. Our tool helps you recognize true emergencies.
Mistake: Assuming the worst immediately
Solution: Before assuming your fridge compressor died, check if the outlet works and coils are clean. Simple fixes are often the answer.
Mistake: Ignoring warning signs until complete failure
Solution: Strange noises, declining performance, and intermittent issues often precede failure. Address them early.
Mistake: Attempting repairs beyond your skill level
Solution: Knowing what's wrong doesn't mean you should fix it yourself. Gas appliances and electrical components need professional handling.
Mistake: Not checking the simple stuff
Solution: Dryer not heating? Check if it's on the right setting. Dishwasher not cleaning? Check if spray arms can rotate freely.
Some situations require professional expertise for safety or complexity:
Most common causes: dirty condenser coils (clean them), failed condenser fan (check if it spins), blocked air vents inside (rearrange food), faulty door seals (check for gaps), or failed evaporator fan. Start with cleaning coils—it's free and solves many cooling issues.
The #1 cause is restricted airflow from a clogged lint trap or exhaust vent. Clean both thoroughly. If that doesn't help: check if the gas is on (gas dryers), or the heating element may be failed (electric dryers). The thermal fuse may also be blown.
Check these in order: clean the filter (bottom of dishwasher), clear spray arm holes, run hot water before starting, use fresh detergent, and don't overload. Hard water deposits also reduce cleaning—run a cleaning cycle with dishwasher cleaner.
Most common: clogged drain pump filter (clean it—usually behind a small panel at the bottom front). Also check: drain hose for kinks or clogs, and ensure the drain hose isn't inserted too far into the standpipe. If none of these help, the drain pump may be failed.
